The Pasadena/LA context and the nature of the program practically demanded a dynamic, long, linear building that bent and twisted along an existing light rail line, simultaneously addressing the function of linear assembly, the essence of speed and motion, and the connections between disparate elements at either end of the area. The given site however, is square. All the dynamism and movement then had to come into and be maintained in an essentially static initial footprint.

The facility sits in a parking lot adjacent to the Art Center College of Design and serves as a research laboratory for Art Center students. Industrial warehouses, power plants, and water treatment facilities surround the site.
